Kapoor Family secures copyright for Rishi Kapoor’s name to prevent misuse
The family of late Bollywood icon Rishi Kapoor has taken a legal step to safeguard the legendary actor’s legacy by securing copyright rights over his name.
This move ensures that no individual or organisation can use “Rishi Kapoor” in any professional, commercial, or public capacity without prior approval from the family.
According to a report by India Today, the copyright approval now requires anyone wishing to use the actor’s name to seek explicit permission. A source explained, “As per the copyright, anyone wanting to use the name Rishi Kapoor or mention it in any capacity would need prior permission from the family.”
The step was taken to prevent misuse of the late star’s name and reputation following his passing.
Rishi Kapoor, one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved actors, passed away on April 30, 2020, at the age of 67 after battling leukemia. Over the years, several Bollywood celebrities have taken similar measures to protect their identities, including Shilpa Shetty, Kajol, Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Anil Kapoor.
These legal protections typically prevent unauthorised commercial exploitation, including merchandise, brand endorsements, or ventures attempting to capitalise on a celebrity’s identity without permission.
The Kapoor family’s move highlights the importance of preserving the legacy of iconic stars in the ever-growing entertainment industry.
