Kylie Minogue addresses Taylor Swift ‘showgirl’ comparisons

Kylie Minogue has responded to online chatter comparing her signature “Showgirl” era to Taylor Swift’s latest album visuals. The discussion erupted after Swift unveiled the cover for her upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl on Wednesday, sparking debate among music fans.

Swift, 35, known for hits like Cruel Summer, revealed glamorous images featuring feathered headpieces and gem-encrusted outfits. The announcement immediately reminded many of Minogue’s Showgirl: The Greatest Hits tour in 2005, a major moment in the Australian star’s career.

Taking to Instagram, Minogue shared a carousel of her own “Showgirl” memories. “When all your friends start sending you your Showgirl mems!!! Awww,” she wrote. “Showgirl life is a thing, multi-dimensional and so much more than feathers and dazzle. Respect and admiration to all my fellow hard-working showgirls.”

The Can’t Get You Out of My Head singer launched her Showgirl world tour in 2005, performing across Europe before returning to Australia. The tour was famously paused after her breast cancer diagnosis, but the imagery and costumes from that era remain some of her most iconic looks.

Social media quickly split into two camps. Some fans accused Swift of “copying” Minogue’s style. “Kylie is the one and only showgirl! No shade to Taylor, but Kylie is the ultimate,” one person commented. Another added, “There’s only one Showgirl and that’s our Kylie.”

Others defended Swift, suggesting that multiple artists can embrace the theme. “Is ‘showgirl’ only reserved for Kylie? I’m a fan of both. How about we stop pitting women against each other?” one user posted.

Swift announced The Life of a Showgirl earlier this week while appearing on boyfriend Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast. The 12th studio album is set for release on October 3, following 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department. The album artwork, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, features Swift in vintage-inspired showgirl attire, including a dramatic feathered headpiece and jewelled bodysuits.

Despite the online debate, some fans saw the potential for unity rather than rivalry. “Kylie and Taylor should do a collab,” one suggested, a sentiment that has already gained traction among pop music followers.
