PTI seeks appointment of new chief election commissioner
Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz write letters to NA Speaker and Senate Chairman, respectively: CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja’s term ends January 26: Opposition leaders stress compliance with Articles 213 and 215
PTI-backed Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omer Ayub Khan and Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz have written letters to Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, respectively, calling for swift action on the appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), as well as members from Sindh and Balochistan.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed opposition leader Omer Ayub stated in his letter to the NA Speaker that under the Constitution, Sikandar Sultan Raja's tenure as CEC will end on January 26.
Omar Ayub Khan urged the formation of a parliamentary committee of the National Assembly to initiate the appointment process for a new CEC.
In his letter, Omer Ayub highlighted that the parliamentary committee is essential to proceeding with the selection of the next election commissioner.
Separately, Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz addressed a letter to the Senate Chairman, also emphasising the need for forming a parliamentary committee to handle the matter of appointing new CEC and Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) members for Sindh and Balochistan.
Senator Shibli Faraz stated in his letter that under Article 215 of the Constitution of Pakistan, Sikandar Sultan Raja’s term as CEC will conclude on January 26.
Shibli added that the Sindh and Balochistan members of the Election Commission are also set to retire on the same date, necessitating the fulfilment of constitutional requirements under Article 213 by forming a parliamentary committee.
