Tipu Sharif exposes financial reality of TV industry
Pakistani actor and singer-songwriter Tipu Sharif has sparked discussion after opening up about the financial realities of Pakistan's television industry.
During the podcast appearance with Adnan Faisal, the actor revealed that he received only 40% of his usual fee for the blockbuster drama Kaisi Teri Khudgharzi, shedding light on the financial compromises actors sometimes make for important roles.
Speaking about how production houses negotiate with actors, Tipu Sharif claimed that they often capitalize on an actor's enthusiasm for a promising role.
Explaining his remarks, Tipu said production houses sometimes offer actors an excellent role and, once they realize the actor is genuinely interested, reduce the payment because they know the opportunity is difficult to refuse.
Reflecting on Kaisi Teri Khudgharzi, Tipu described it as one of the biggest television hits of its time.
He said the drama became a massive success and further boosted the careers of its lead stars, Danish Taimoor and Durefishan Saleem, who was still relatively new to the industry. The actor then revealed that he received only 40% of his regular fee for the drama.
According to Tipu, the production team justified the reduced payment by citing the financial impact of the post-COVID period on Pakistan's entertainment industry.
Despite receiving a significantly lower fee, Tipu said he accepted the offer because he believed the role would benefit his career.
He said he knew the payment was much lower than usual, but he felt the role was too important to turn down. Working alongside Kamal Bhai and Danish Taimoor, along with the significance of the character, convinced him that the project would be valuable for his career.
Tipu Sharif's remarks have sparked fresh discussion about compensation practices in Pakistan's television industry and the financial compromises some actors make for roles they believe could shape their careers.
Known for his versatility, Tipu Sharif has appeared in several popular dramas, including Mohabbat Aag Si, Sang-e-Mar Mar, Fitoor, Kaisi Teri Khudgharzi, and Mannat Murad.
