Who are in way of Imran Khan and history in Sunday’s by-elections?

October 15, 2022 06:14 PM

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman and former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan may set another milestone in the electoral history of the country if he succeeds to win seven National Assembly seats in one go.

The bye-election tomorrow will be held on eight national assembly and three Punjab assembly seats with the PTI chairman contesting seven out of eight seats.

Khan already holds the record of winning in the most number of constituencies in the 2018 elections when he contested and won all five national assembly seats. In the process, he broke the record of former premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who also contested from five constituencies simultaneously, won 4 seats and lost one.

It is also another record as Khan has become the first-ever candidate to contest elections from seven constituencies simultaneously.

Here is a look at who is standing in the way of Khan’s attempt at making history.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, NA-22 Mardan

Four candidates are in the fray in constituency NA-22 Mardan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PTI Chairman Imran Khan, PDM's Maulana Qasim, Jamaat-e-Islami's Abdul Wasi and independent candidate Muhammad Sarwar are the contestants. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Ali Muhammad Khan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, NA-24 Charsadda

Four candidates are also competing in constituency NA-24 Charsadda of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Former Prime Minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan's opponents in this constituency are PDM's Aimal Wali Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami's Mujibur Rehman and independent candidate Saparle Mohmand. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Fazal Muhammad.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, NA-31 Peshawar

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Constituency NA-31 Peshawar, there is a contest between seven candidtes. Chairman PTI Imran Khan will compete against Mohammad Aslam of Jamaat-e-Islami, Saeedullah of Rahe-e-Haq Party, Tehreek-i-Jawanan's Abdul Qadir and independent candidate Shaukat.

Punjab, NA-108 Faisalabad

10 candidates are contesting in the NA-108 constituency of Punjab. PTI's Imran Khan will face PDM's Abid Sher Ali, TLP's Muhammad Siddique, and Pakistan Nazriati Party's Khurram Shehzad among others. This seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Farrukh Habib.

Punjab, NA-118 Nankana Sahib

There is a contest between three candidates in the NA-118 constituency of Punjab. Imran Khan of PTI will face Shazra Mansab Ali of PDM and Pir Afzal Hussain Shah of Tehreek-e-Libak Pakistan. This seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Ijaz Shah.

Sindh, NA 237 Malir Karachi

11 candidates are contesting in Sindh Constituency NA 237 Malir, Karachi. Among them, PTI's Imran Khan, PPP's Abdul Hakeem Baloch, TLP's Samiullah and PSP's Aamir Shekhani are prominent. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Jameel Muhammad.

Sindh, NA 239 Korangi Karachi

In Sindh Constituency NA 239 Korangi Karachi, 22 candidates are contesting. Among them, a thorny contest is expected between PTI's Imran Khan and MQM-Pakistan's Nayyer Ali. Khurram Mansoor of the Mahajir Qumi Movement, and Imran Haider of PPP will also try their luck. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Akram Cheema.

Other constituencies

Aside from these seven constituencies where Imran Khan is a candidate, the election will also be held on one national assembly seat in Multan and three provincial assembly seats in Punjab.

Details are following:

Punjab, NA-157Multan

Eight candidates are in the fray, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi's daughter Mehar Bano in NA-157 Multan constituency of Punjab. A tough contest is expected between PTI's Mehar Bano Qureshi and PDM's Ali Musa Geelani. TLP's Tahir Ahmed, independent candidate Salman Elahi and independent candidate Babar Dogar will also try their luck. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of PTI's Zain Qureshi, who resigned from national assembly to join the Punjab Assembly. Since the matter of resignation here is different from the resignations given by other members of the PTI assembly in protest, Imran Khan is not a candidate from this constituency.

Punjab, PP 139 Sharqpur

Nine candidates are in the fray for Punjab Assembly Constituency Sharqpur PP 139. A tough fight is expected between the three of them. Haji Iftikhar of Muslim League (N), Abubakar Sharqpuri of PTI and Dr. Rauf Gujjar of Tehreek-e-Labaik are the contestants. This seat fell vacant due to the resignation of Jalil Sharqpuri of PML-N. The group of five members of the Punjab Assembly under the leadership of Jalil Sharqpur remained rebellious from their party Muslim League (N) and supported Tehreek-e-Insaaf.

Punjab, PP 209 Khanewal

Eight candidates have entered the fray in the Khanewal PP 209 constituency of Punjab. Faisal Niazi of PTI and Ziaur Rehman of PML-N are in a tough contest. This seat fell vacant due to the resignation of Faisal Niazi of PML-N. He was also among the rebel members.
