10 gas wells damaged as flood hit OGDCL field in Sindh

The Indus River flood has wreaked havoc in Qadirpur Gas Field, submerging surrounding villages and forcing the shutdown of ten gas wells after floodwater entered their platforms, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Friday.

According to details, the swollen Indus has eroded riverbanks, allowing floodwater to infiltrate the ERW system of wells located in Block 6 of the Kacha area. The deluge swept away protective plates, leaving several production wells severely damaged.

Sources disclosed that due to the erosion and submersion, protective plates of the wells were washed away, leading to a complete suspension of gas production from ten wells.

Regional Coordinator Syed Qamar Ali Shah of OGDCL Sukkur confirmed that the ERW platforms sustained heavy damage due to the Indus erosion.

“Gas production from ten wells has been halted for the past two days, causing a shortage in supply,” he added.

The regional coordinator further noted that in addition to halting production, the floods have inflicted material losses worth millions of rupees.

He said repair operations cannot begin until the water level recedes, officials said, adding that even the 2010 super floods had not caused such extensive damage to the ERW platforms.

Teams are currently deployed on-site to minimise further losses, while restoration work will commence once floodwaters subside, he said.

The Qadirpur Gas Field, one of Sindh’s vital gas-producing sites, houses numerous wells spread across the flood-prone Katcha area of Ghotki.
