Education Department shuts down Faisalabad's only transgender school
The Punjab Education Department has shut down the only transgender school in Faisalabad.
According to a report aired by 24NewsHD on Tuesday, the FirstStep Khawaja Sara Palace Non-Formal High School, located in Mohammadi Colony, Shah Faisalabad, was abruptly closed. Teachers were dismissed without payment, and more than fifty transgender students were forced to discontinue their education overnight.
The closure led to an immediate protest outside the office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Education in Faisalabad.
Transgender teachers and students gathered to voice their concerns, demanding restoration of the school and release of unpaid salaries.
Protesters said the shutdown has not only rendered educators jobless but has also stripped students of a rare and vital opportunity to learn in a safe, inclusive environment.
Established in 2023, the school was the only transgender-focused educational institution in the entire Faisalabad division.
For many students, it represented more than a place of learning. Protesters emphasized that the school played a crucial role in steering transgender individuals away from begging and other exploitative activities by providing education, dignity, and direction.
FirstStep Khawaja Sara Palace Non-Formal High School was also deeply embedded in community life.
The institution had previously organized events such as Mehfil-e-Milad, large Langar and Niyaz distributions, educational field trips, and free food camps specifically for the transgender community. It also observed Transgender Day of Remembrance with solemn respect at KPG on November 23, 2025 to further awareness and inclusion.
The school worked in collaboration with civil society organizations, and other transgender organisations including Sathi Foundation which showed its strengthened impact and outreach within the community.
Protesters have appealed directly to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, urging her to intervene, restore the school, and ensure payment of outstanding salaries.
