Private schools issued show-cause notices for 'forcing parents to buy branded uniforms'

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has issued show-cause notices to 17 private school systems over allegations that they are forcing parents to purchase branded uniforms and stationery, a practice seen as restricting competition and burdening families financially.

According to the Commission, the schools were initially asked to respond to the notices within a set timeframe. However, on the request of the school administrations, the deadline for submitting written replies has been extended to December 30. The Commission confirmed that some school systems have already submitted their responses.

Officials said that once all responses are received, a formal schedule for hearings will be finalized to examine the matter in detail.

Commenting on the issue, Dr. Kabir Sidhu emphasized that education is a sector of public interest and must be governed by principles of fairness and transparency. He said the Competition Commission is committed to ensuring fair competition in the education sector and will take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
