Snicko error hands Alex Carey lifeline as BBG Sports admits mistake in Ashes Test

Controversy erupted on the opening day of the third Ashes Test on Wednesday after Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey wrongly survived a caught-behind review against England due to a technology error, 24NewsHD TV  reported. 

Carey went on to score a crucial 106 off 143 balls on his home ground, helping Australia recover from early trouble to reach 326 for 8 at stumps.

 His innings proved pivotal after Australia lost two quick wickets in the first over following the lunch break.

However, Carey could have been dismissed much earlier in his innings.

Batting on 72 with the score at 245 for 6, the left-hander appeared to edge a delivery during the 62nd over.

England immediately appealed for a caught behind and opted for a review.

Although a clear sound was heard as the ball passed Carey’s outside edge and a prominent spike appeared on Snicko, on-field umpire Ahsan Raza’s not-out decision was upheld.

Third umpire Chris Gaffaney ruled that the spike on Snicko had appeared before the ball reached the bat.

Later, BBG Sports — the company responsible for operating the Snicko technology — admitted an error that led to Carey’s wrongful survival.

It was revealed that the audio used during the review was taken from the bowler's end stump microphone instead of the striker’s end mic, causing a mismatch between the sound and the visual evidence.

Now, England are considering a formal complaint over the Snicko technology being used in this Ashes series.
