Unrest over arrest of officials ‘supplying drugs’ into Larkana jail
Inmates took hostage three Larkana Central Jail officials, Ismail, Shah Nawaz and Amjad Memon after the arrest of a prison official and a dispenser on charges of supplying narcotics and being involved in other illegal activities, sources said on Wednesday.
The arrests were made as Jail authorities banned illegal activities, insiders said adding that the inmates created mess after they were denied playing gambling, using mobile and narcotics supply.
The jail authorities handed over the suspected official and the dispenser to the police concerned that registered a case against the officials.
Last month, prisoners protest against a search operation for mobile phones and other prohibited items made jail authorities call additional police force and Rangers personnel.
Video clips from the jail went viral showing the prisoners agitating and making speeches against jail officials.
When the protest grew louder, jail police lobbed a few tear gear gas shells at the prisoners and also fired in the air, according to videos of the protest.
A jail source disclosed that it was basically the issue of recovering mobile phones from prisoners that sparked the protest.
