Agriculture crisis deepens in country as tractor sales hit historic low in 2025

Despite being an agriculture-based country, Pakistan has witnessed a sharp decline in tractor sales, hitting the lowest level in more than two decades, raising serious concerns about the health of the farming sector, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday. 

According to a report released by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), tractor sales in 2025 fell dramatically, recording the weakest performance in 20 years.

A total of 14,756 fewer tractors were sold during the year compared to the previous year, marking a significant downturn.

The situation worsened in December 2025, when tractor sales dropped to just 24,724 units, the lowest December figure in two decades.

 In contrast, 39,480 tractors were sold in 2024, highlighting the scale of the decline within a single year.

The data also shows how far the sector has fallen from its peak.

Tractor sales were at their highest in 2017, when a record 66,369 units were sold — more than double the current level.

Industry experts attribute the slump to rising input costs, high interest rates, reduced farmer purchasing power, and uncertainty in agricultural policies.

The decline in tractor sales is widely seen as a troubling indicator for Pakistan’s agricultural productivity, rural employment, and overall economic stability.
