Guard killed in attack on former AJK premier Tanveer Ilyas’ convoy

A security guard was killed and several people were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the convoy of former Azad Jammu and Kashmir prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas in Poonch Division, sources said.

Ilyas remained unharmed because he was travelling in a bulletproof vehicle, according to initial reports.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their identities and medical conditions were not immediately disclosed.

The assailant or assailants fled after the shooting, prompting security forces to launch a search operation across the area. Checkpoints were established at several locations, and vehicles and individuals were being searched as authorities attempted to trace the suspects.

Security was placed on high alert across Azad Kashmir following the incident.

Political and social figures condemned the attack and expressed concern over the law and order situation, particularly in Poonch Division. They called on the government to conduct a transparent investigation and immediately arrest those responsible.

Some political circles also raised questions about groups accused of contributing to unrest in the region, including the Pak Kashmir Solidarity Council, reportedly led by Abdul Majid Irshad. However, no evidence establishing any group’s involvement in the attack was immediately presented, and authorities had not announced a possible motive.

Analysts and community representatives called for stronger measures to counter violence and instability while also addressing what they described as challenges on the ideological and political fronts.
