KP approves waste-to-fuel project in Peshawar under Public Private Partnership

The 10th meeting of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Committee, chaired by Muhammad Sohail Afridi, approved a proposal for a waste-to-fuel project in Peshawar aimed at promoting sustainable waste management and reducing reliance on imported energy sources.

Speaking at the meeting, the chief minister said the project would help cut dependence on imported coal, conserve foreign exchange, and generate employment opportunities. He added that the initiative would also bring economic benefits through carbon credits and industrial applications.

Afridi noted that the project would convert municipal waste into usable fuel using modern technology, describing it as a step towards establishing a modern and sustainable waste management system in the provincial capital.

According to a briefing given to the committee, the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) project would enable the use of processed waste as an alternative to coal in the cement industry. Officials said the initiative is expected to reduce waste accumulation at landfill sites and improve environmental conditions.

The briefing further highlighted that the project would contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and support environmentally friendly waste management practices. Material recovery and processing facilities will be set up at the Shamshto landfill site under the plan.

Officials also informed the meeting that the unsolicited proposal submitted by a private company would be presented in the market to ensure transparency and encourage competition.

The chief minister reiterated that the project would significantly ease pressure on landfill sites and contribute to environmental and economic sustainability.
