Kalash tribe’s ancient Chilam Joshi festival concludes in Chitral

The famous festival of the Kalash tribe, Chilam Joshi, concluded in Chitral after several days of colourful celebrations attended by large numbers of local and foreign tourists, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

The festival took place in the scenic Bamburet Valley, where men and women from different Kalash villages gathered wearing traditional dresses and singing cultural songs while dancing to the beat of drums.

A striking scene unfolded as Kalash men and women, dressed in brightly coloured attire, entered the central dancing area while waving walnut branches and blowing whistles in keeping with centuries-old traditions. 

The celebrations created a lively atmosphere that attracted significant interest from tourists and photographers.

Young boys, girls and elderly members of the community participated enthusiastically in the festivities, performing traditional dances and rituals that reflected the rich cultural heritage of the Kalash people.

Chilam Joshi is regarded as the Kalash tribe’s spring festival and has been celebrated since ancient times to mark the end of harsh winter months, heavy snowfall and rainfall. 

The occasion also symbolises the arrival of spring, preparations for crops and abundance of milk from livestock.

As part of the traditional rituals, milk is collected at the beginning of the festival, followed a week later by a ceremonial milk-drinking ritual known as “Cheerak Pipi”.

The festival includes a series of small and large cultural and religious ceremonies performed in different villages.

However, men and women from across the valley gather at the main religious site of Batrik in Bamburet to perform the final rituals marking the conclusion of the festival.
