The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will decide tomorrow (Tuesday) whether or not to hold local government elections in Karachi, reported
24NewsHD TV channel.
The local body elections in Karachi Division are scheduled on October 23, however, the Sindh government again requested the ECP to postpone the election. Through a letter, the Sindh Government has submitted the commission that police and security agencies are busy in the flood-hit areas. The Sindh police claimed at least 39,000 policemen are required for the local government elections and there is a shortfall of more than 16,000 officials in the required number.
In this regard, an important meeting of ECP officials was held in Islamabad on Monday to decide the fate of the elections. The meeting was chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner Raja Sikander while members of ECP, Interior Secretary and other officials also participated in the meeting.
In the meeting, the ECP seeking the help of the Interior Ministry asked could the Ministry fulfill the requirement of 16,000 security forces for the Sindh government. The Ministry of Interior should give us an answer to this matter tomorrow, instructed the commission.
According to the sources, the local elections may be possible with the assurance of 16,000 security forces on static duty at the polling stations of the Ministry of Interior.
Static deployment of the Pakistan Army and Rangers at all polling stations is imperative due to the security situation and the intensity of public sentiment in local elections.
The meeting of the Election Commission will be held again tomorrow in which it will be decided whether or not to hold local elections.
