India set to axe Gill, Siraj from Asia Cup 2025 squad: Report

The Indian cricket board is reportedly considering some major exclusions, including star batter Shubman Gill and pacer Mohammed Siraj, from the Asia Cup 2025 squad, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to a Cricbuzz report, the selection committee will meet on August 19 to finalize the team for the continental tournament.

Gill, despite his stellar performance in the recent Test series against England, might be sidelined to maintain the current T20I opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is reportedly the preferred choice as the third opener.

Other batters in contention include Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and Washington Sundar, while Jitesh Sharma is being considered for the backup wicketkeeper role.

In the bowling department, Mohammed Siraj’s place is uncertain following Jasprit Bumrah’s confirmed return.

The pace attack is expected to feature Arshdeep Singh, with Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana also in the mix.

Hardik Pandya is likely to secure a spot as the additional pace-bowling all-rounder, while veteran Mohammed Shami remains out of contention after missing T20Is since early this year.

The potential omissions mark a significant shift in India’s strategy as they prepare for the Asia Cup, balancing form and team dynamics ahead of the tournament.
