The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday issued notices to all respondents, including federal government, on the petitions filed against the levy of additional taxes on the electricity bills, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

A three-member bench of the SC, headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, heard the petitions.

Speaking on the occasion, counsel for the petitioners said that the law of registration did not apply to the petitioners’ departments. “In the light of the relevant law, only those departments are bound to pay extra taxes which have not got their registration done,” he said, adding that these departments were already paying the General Sales Tax (GST).

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked how strange that half of the tax was to be paid and half not. “Why don’t you people say you don’t have to pay a single tax?” the judge added.

The court later adjourned the hearing of the petitions until April 25.
