Marked hike in duty on import of several items proposed

In view of depleting national reserves and to augment the country’s income, the government has suggested increasing duty tax on a number of imported items, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. 

It has recommended increasing duty on tiles, machinery and household items by 50, 10 and 50 per cent, respectively. 

Similarly, 30 per cent hike in the duty levied on the machinery imported for use in the power producing units has been recommended.   

Similarly, 100 per cent increase in the regulatory duty levied on the import of cars of over 1, 000 cc is also on the cards. 

Likewise, the government has suggested 10 per cent hike in the duty levied on imported steel and its products and 40 per cent increase in the duty currently being collected on ceramics. 

Similarly, there is a proposal to increase duty on the cellphone sets, which currently stands at Rs6, 000, to Rs44, 000.
