North Korea test-fires multiple ballistic missiles: Korea, Japan say

North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles on Sunday in another weapons test, marking its fourth missile launch this month and the seventh so far this year, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday. 

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea, the missiles were launched at around 6:10 am local time from near the eastern coastal city of Sinpo.

The projectiles flew approximately 140 kilometres before landing in the sea.

The Japanese government also confirmed the launches via social media, saying the missiles fell near waters off the Korean Peninsula’s eastern coast.

Japan has been closely monitoring the situation alongside regional allies.

In response, the South Korean presidential office, known as the Blue House, convened an emergency security meeting.

Officials condemned the launches as a provocation, saying they violate United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The type of missiles fired was not immediately confirmed, though Sinpo is known as a site associated with submarine facilities and tests of submarine-launched ballistic missile systems, according to previous assessments cited by foreign media.
