Iran has declared the US state of California as part of its territory, with the Iranian consulate in Hyderabad, India, releasing a map that shows the state as a new region of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel report, the map places California within Iranian territory in what appears to be a response to US President Donald Trump’s claim over the Strait of Hormuz.
The move has drawn attention because California and Los Angeles are home to a large population of people of Iranian origin.
According to the Migration Policy Institute, the size of the Iranian community in Los Angeles has led some members of the community to informally refer to the city as “Tehrangeles”.
Meanwhile, Iranian Army Chief Lieutenant General Ali Abdollahi warned countries that allow their territory to be used for attacks against Iran that they would have to pay a heavy price.
He said countries providing facilities to the US military for an anti-Iran war would be regarded as taking part in the conflict.
The Iranian army chief warned that countries allowing their territory to be used for attacks on Iran should understand that Iran could not be kept unaware of developments.
He said Iran knew what was happening in the countries involved and warned that supporting military action against Tehran would carry serious consequences.
