Allama Raja Nasir Abbas set to be appointed as senate opposition leader

Following the National Assembly, a consensus between the PTI and the ruling alliance has been reached on the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to sources, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas is set to be appointed as the Senate Opposition Leader, and a formal notification will be issued after the completion of legal and procedural requirements.

The sources said the process is underway in line with the Senate rules and parliamentary norms.

The matter came under discussion during a consultative meeting held in the Chairman of the Senate’s chamber, which was attended by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, among others.

Following the meeting, the law minister also held a separate discussion with the Chairman Senat Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, regarding the opposition leader’s appointment.

Sources said the Chairman Senate has made it clear that the issue will be resolved soon.

Delays occurred due to procedural complexities, as individual declarations from opposition members are required, and their verification was still in progress.

Speaking to the media after meeting with the Chairman of the Senate, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said that the process for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate was nearing completion, following meetings between opposition members and the Chairman of the Senate.

The law minister said that consultations with the opposition had taken place and the matter had been discussed in detail.

He explained that procedural complications often arise in the appointment of the opposition leader, as individual declarations from each opposition senator are required and must be verified, a process that had been underway.

The Chairman Senate, he added, has clearly stated that the issue will be resolved and the appointment finalised soon.

Tarar said that regardless of who assumes the office, the role and responsibilities of the opposition leader remain the same.

He urged the opposition to move beyond issues of arrests, releases, and imprisonments and instead focus on public issues and constructive politics.

“Politics functions when the country functions. Pakistan must come first,” he said, calling on political forces to prioritise national interests, focus on development-oriented work, and correct their own shortcomings to stabilise the system.

Commenting on the upcoming joint session of parliament, the law minister said there was nothing unusual on the agenda and that pending legislative business would be taken up.

Responding to a journalist’s question about whether Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lacked a leader capable of performing the role of opposition leader, Tarar remarked that it was painful to see such a large party or parliamentary group unable to present a nominee. However, he stressed that it was ultimately the party’s own decision.
