Beyoncé Concert ends in chaos as cockroach sighting triggers stampede

A magical night celebrating Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour ended in panic when a stampede broke out at a metro station near Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The chaos unfolded shortly after midnight, as thousands of fans were leaving the venue following the singer’s final Atlanta show.

At the nearby Vine City MARTA Station, a sudden commotion led to a mass of concertgoers piling onto a descending escalator, causing it to speed up and then jolt to a stop, hurling people onto the floor.

According to MARTA officials, the terrifying stampede left 11 people injured, with one fan suffering a broken ankle and seven others rushed to hospital for scrapes and cuts. Two more sought medical help after arriving at their destinations.

In a bizarre twist, officials revealed the trigger for the chaos: a 10-year-old girl reportedly screamed after spotting a cockroach, which startled nearby passengers and sparked a ripple of panic.

“There was someone who started to scream outside of the station,” said MARTA’s acting CEO, Rhonda Allen. “She was startled by a bug outside–outside the large crowd.”

The scream reportedly caused a surge of people already packed on the escalator to panic. The increased movement and weight allegedly overwhelmed the machine, making it briefly accelerate before the brakes suddenly engaged.

Videos captured the moment fans tumbled onto one another, some trying to help others to safety amid the crush.

One particularly graphic clip circulating online shows a fan’s leg severely lacerated and oozing blood.

Transit officials say the escalator had passed its most recent inspection on July 10, just days before the incident. A follow-up inspection the morning after the stampede confirmed no mechanical fault. Schindler, the company behind the escalator, stated the unit was likely overloaded beyond design capacity, triggering its emergency safety system.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, MARTA says it will implement “aggressive” crowd management and staffing during large events.

Despite the unfortunate ending, Beyoncé's Atlanta stop was one of four shows in the city, concluding her southern leg of the Cowboy Carter tour.

She is scheduled to perform next in Las Vegas on July 25 and 26.
