Motorway Police issue Eid travel advisory, enforce reduced speed limits

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued a travel advisory ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, urging commuters to exercise caution as traffic volume on motorways and highways is expected to increase significantly during the holidays.

A spokesperson for the Central Zone said special measures have been taken to manage traffic pressure and ensure public safety. Drivers have been advised to strictly follow reduced speed limits and adopt safe driving practices.

According to the advisory, the speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTV) on motorways has been set at 100 km/h, while public service and heavy transport vehicles (PSV/HTV) must not exceed 90 km/h. On highways, cars and LTVs are restricted to 80 km/h, while PSV and HTV drivers are required to maintain speeds within 65 km/h.

Motorists have also been instructed to maintain lane discipline, wear seat belts, and drive carefully to avoid accidents. The spokesperson advised commuters to obtain travel-related information through the Motorway Police helpline 130 or via official social media platforms before starting their journey.

Meanwhile, the Central Region has intensified its campaign against overcharging and traffic violations on the instructions of Inspector General Sultan Chaudhry. Officials said 937 vehicles were fined Rs4.8 million for overloading, while 203 buses were directed to refund over Rs700,000 to passengers.

In addition, 15,056 challans were issued for overspeeding under the revised limits. Authorities have also cautioned citizens to remain vigilant while travelling, particularly on national highways where rain may affect driving conditions.

The Motorway Police reiterated its appeal to the public to prioritise safety and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth travel during Eid.
