A police officer and his gunman were killed when some unidentified persons opened fire at them near Motorway Bypass in Peshawar on Thursday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

One of the slain persons was identified as Shakil Khan, who was serving as station house officer (SHO) at Shahpur police station of the city. 

A heavy contingent of the police reached the crime scene and took the bodies into possession. 

Police officials said the assailants, however, managed to escape from the spot, after killing the policemen. 

They further said that an investigation into the incident had been launched.
