Sindh Police say Safdar’s arrest as per law

October 19, 2020 03:24 PM

In a first official version after the high profile arrest of the Captain (retd) Safdar Awan, the Sindh Police said the arrest was done according to law and the investigation will be impartial and on merit, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Captain retired Safdar has been arrested a day after he raised slogans at the Founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s mausoleum after reaching along with her wife and PML-N workers for Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) second power show at Bagh-i-Jinnah in Karachi.

The TV channel reported complainant Waqas Ahmed registered first information report (FIR) against Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Safdar Awan and 200 others for violating the sanctity of the Quaid's mausoleum. In the FIR, he alleged that the PML-N leaders, along with 200 of their followers, reached the Quaid's grave where Safdar jumped over the grill surrounding it in violation of The Quaid-i-Azam’s Mazar (Protection and Maintenance) Ordinance, 1971.

Under the law, staging public demonstrations or engaging in any political activity within the premises of the mausoleum is strictly prohibited and punishable with imprisonment and/or a fine.

The law reads: "No person shall organise, convene or take part in any meeting or demonstration or procession or engage in political activity within the premises of Quaid's mausoleum or within a distance of ten feet from the outer boundary thereof.”
