According to series creator-director Hwang Dong-hyuk, Leonardo DiCaprio might be asked to join the cast of Netflix's Emmy-winning international blockbuster hit "Squid Game" in a later season.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk responded to a query at a recent Netflix press event in Seoul about whether Hollywood actors will be there in season 2, by saying: “There will be no known Hollywood actor in Season 2...it’s still set in Korea.” 

However, Dong-hyuk stated that he is aware that Leonardo DiCaprio is a fan of the show and that a third season with him is not completely out of the question. “Maybe if time or chances allow, we can ask [Leo] to join the games.”

According to Hwang, production on the second season of will start in 2023, with a premiere scheduled for 2024. “We will start shooting Season 2 next year and it’ll be released the following year,” he revealed.

Lead actor winner Lee Jung-jae stated to the media: “Though much news about ‘Squid Game’ has been released and we’ve received many awards, what’s more important and happy for me is the fact that Korean content is reaching out and well-loved by so many people around the world. I hope more Korean content, similar to Seasons 2 and 3 of ‘Squid Game,’ will be released so that more brilliant filmmakers, actors and actresses will gain more opportunities to meet global audiences.”

The first Korean drama to dominate Netflix's top 10 weekly most-watched TV show charts globally in 94 countries, "Squid Game" made waves when it debuted as a Netflix original almost exactly a year ago. According to the streaming service, 1.65 billion hours of viewing were logged in the first 28 days following the show's Sept. 17 premiere.
