Pakistan’s first ccoblation cancer treatment centre inaugurated at Mayo Hospital

Punjab has marked a historic milestone in healthcare with the inauguration of Pakistan’s first modern coblation cancer treatment centre at  Mayo Hospital, Lahore, 24NewsHD TV reported on Friday. 

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz formally launched the facility, describing it as a revolutionary step that makes Punjab the national leader in advanced cancer care.

For the first time in the country, cancer patients can now be treated through Chinese-developed coblation technology, a cutting-edge alternative to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The system uses electrical heat to burn affected tissues, allowing tumours to be destroyed in as little as one hour without the painful side effects associated with traditional treatments.

Medical experts say the technology ensures faster recovery, reduced discomfort, and greater precision in targeting tumours.

Maryam Nawaz told the inauguration ceremony that the new method provides free cancer treatment without chemotherapy, making Punjab the first province to achieve such a breakthrough.

She revealed that the coblation machine was specially imported from China and is currently unavailable elsewhere in the region.

“This machine is a ray of hope for cancer patients. With this technology, a patient can be cured of this deadly disease within just one hour,” she said.

The chief minister added that the machine alone costs Rs250 million, while each probe is priced at $5,500. The Punjab government has allocated Rs5 billion to support this initiative, ensuring that patients unable to afford treatment will receive it free of charge.

 A senior doctor, Dr. Shehzad, was also sent to China for specialized training to ensure smooth implementation of the technology.

Doctors at Mayo Hospital have already tested the coblation system successfully.

In five cases, including patients with breast, lung, and liver cancers, the treatment proved highly effective, and the patients are now in good health.

Medical experts believe this innovation will transform the way cancer is treated in Pakistan, replacing lengthy, painful procedures with a safer, faster, and more effective option.

In addition to this advancement, the Punjab government has announced plans to develop artificial intelligence (AI) models for early diagnosis of future diseases, signaling a broader vision for healthcare modernization in the province.

With the launch of the coblation centre, Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to provide cancer treatment without chemotherapy or radiotherapy, positioning itself as a pioneer in modern healthcare innovation.
