Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Shabbar Zaidi has gone on sick leave for an indefinite period just two days before an IMF team arrives to monitor enforcement of bailout terms.
Nausheen Javed Amjad, a BS-22 officer, will work as FBR chairperson in Zaidi's absence. Health issues were cited as reason for the leave. On Jan 1, the FBR chief resumed office after a two-week break because of ‘health issues’.
The board rejected rumours about differences among economic team members and intensified its anti-corruption campaign.
The board fired Member of Customs Operation Agha Jawad on corruption charges a few days before his retirement. The government has transferred all his aides from important posts and appointed new officers. Poor performance on part of the FBR perturbed Abdul Hafeez Shaikh when he visited its headquarters.
