PMDC sends medical student suicide, harassment and video leak cases to disciplinary committee

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has completed initial hearings into a series of serious cases, including the suicide of medical students, harassment allegations, and a hospital video leak scandal, and has referred all matters to its disciplinary committee for final decisions.

According to the council, preliminary proceedings were held in three key cases to assess facts and gather evidence. Representatives from the concerned institutions were summoned, and after reviewing initial findings, the cases were forwarded for further action.

Among the cases reviewed was the alleged suicide of a student from Fatima Jinnah Medical University, identified as Fariha, as well as the case of Fehmida Leghari, a student from Muhammad Medical College. Principals of both institutions appeared before the council and presented their positions during the hearings.

The council also took up the controversy surrounding a viral video allegedly recorded in the operation theatre of Lady Wellington Hospital. Five doctors appeared before the panel as the matter of the inappropriate video came under scrutiny.

The PMDC reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against harassment and negligence, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against those found responsible for misconduct or mismanagement. It further stressed that violations of student protection laws will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

All cases have now been referred to the disciplinary committee, which is scheduled to meet next week. The council highlighted the importance of establishing an effective grievance redressal system within educational institutions and ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for students.
