Punjab govt ready to hold LB polls in province, minister assures ECP

Punjab Local Bodies Minister Zeeshan Rafiq said on Thursday that the provincial government was ready to hold local bodies’ elections in the province, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials, he said he had conveyed to the ECP the provincial government’s readiness in this regard. “In this connection, the government has given its recommendations to the election commission,” he said, adding that now the ECP would decide the date for the elections. 

Rafiq said that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was quite clear that local bodies’ polls were the people’s right and they should be given this right. 

Earlier, a meeting was held between the provincial ministers and the ECP representatives on releasing the schedule for holding the LBs elections. 

Rafiq was accompanied by other provincial ministers as well as Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman. 

On the other hand, the ECP has given to the KP government a deadline of three weeks for holding LBs polls in the province.

Later, the election commission adjourned the case’s hearing for three weeks.
