Tahir Andrabi calls for stronger global disarmament efforts
President in Office of the United Nation conference on Disarmament Tahir Hussain Andrabi has said the world has become more dangerous and the need for effective disarmament efforts are greater than ever, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel.
While leading the Conference on Disarmament in 2026 Andrabi, said that it was a unique honour for Pakistan and a personal honour for him, as he had previously served as Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative in Geneva from 2017 to 2021.
Andrabi said while much had changed outside the conference, its situation remained largely unchanged, adding that the global security environment had worsened significantly over the past five years.
He pointed to the spread of armed conflicts in different parts of the world and the ineffectiveness of important arms control agreements. Andrabi highlighted the expansion and modernisation of weapons stockpiles, changes in defence policies and the rapid development of space, cyber and artificial intelligence technologies beyond existing international rules.
Andrabi said trust among major powers had reached one of its lowest levels in decades, making the Conference on Disarmament more important than ever.
