Ramadan health advisory: Kidney specialist urges people to cut use of tea, coffee and meat

Associate Professor Dr Shabbir Chaudhary, a urologist and kidney transplant surgeon, has shared important health guidelines to help people maintain optimal kidney function during Ramadan.

In a recent video message, Dr Chaudhary emphasized that lifestyle and dietary habits during fasting can significantly impact kidney health, particularly for those already suffering from kidney-related conditions.

The specialist strongly advised people to avoid caffeine-rich beverages during suhoor, including tea, coffee and carbonated drinks such as sodas. He explained that caffeine acts as a diuretic, increasing urine production and accelerating fluid loss from the body. This, he noted, can lead to dehydration during fasting hours and put additional strain on the kidneys.

Dr Chaudhary also highlighted the importance of moderating protein intake. According to him, excessive consumption of protein-heavy foods such as meat, eggs and rich barbecue items increases the kidneys’ workload. He recommended limiting these foods during Ramadan to help maintain balanced kidney function.

In addition to dietary adjustments, the urologist encouraged people to remain physically active throughout the holy month. He stressed that fasting should not be considered a reason to avoid exercise, adding that regular physical activity contributes to overall well-being and supports healthier fasting.
