The National Assembly Standing Committee on Power that met with Chaudhry Salik Hussain in the chair on Wednesday expressed concern over the recent blackout in the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

When Chaudhry Salik asked as to what had caused the blackout, Federal Minister for Energy Omar Ayub Khan said inquiry report in this regard will be made public in a day or two and details of which would be shared with the committee.

He informed that National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and NTDC were also trying to ascertain the causes of the countrywide power breakdown.

The NA body chairman said the world was wondering that still there was a country that remained without electricity for hours.

The NEPRA chairman said that the Authority’s team was at Guddu to find out the causes, and that it would complete its probe in two weeks.

Umar Ayub said initial investigation had held human error responsible for the incident.

The minister said future course of action would be devised in the light of findings of inquiry report.

He reminded that several countries in the past, including USA and Canada, had experienced power breakdowns.

Central Power Generation Company Limited (CPGC) had suspended seven officials and employees after one of the worst electricity breakdowns in the country a few days back.

All the major cities had plunged into darkness with millions of homes without electricity which was restored after about 11 hours.

It is pertinent to note that the authorities were able to restore the electricity supply to several parts of the country even next morning after a major fault at a thermal power plant caused the countrywide blackout.

Energy Minister Omar Ayub Khan had said power supply across Pakistan was abruptly cut because of a fault at the Guddu thermal power plant, sending the entire country into darkness.
