Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday made a phone call to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to discuss the issues relating to the arrest of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Captain (Retired) Muhammad Safdar in Karachi a day ago.
Bilawal Bhutto praised the army chief for taking notice of the Karachi incident and ordering an impartial investigation into it.
Karachi Police had arrested Safdar from a hotel room where he was staying with his wife Maryam Nawaz early on Monday morning. He was accused of creating a mess at the shrine of the Father of The Nation Muhammad Ali Jinnah during his visit to the place on Sunday.
Maryam and Safdar had landed in Karachi on Sunday to attend an anti-government meeting of the opposition parties hosted by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) under the banner of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of 11 opposition political parties currently trying to topple the federal government led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Safdar was released later on Monday evening on the orders of the court. However, the arrest became controversial.
Earlier, Bilawal had called upon the army chief and the intelligence chief to take notice of the incident and order an investigation into it.
