Imran, ministers agree 'real opposition' is the price-hike

Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed members of his Cabinet to consider elimination of inflation as their top mission as the premier and his ministers agreed that the real opposition is the price hike, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said this while chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet in Islamabad on Tuesday where price spiral, coronavirus pandemic and Opposition’s protest campaign were discussed in detail.

The majority of the ministers conveyed their reservations and concerns over the increase in prices of essential food items.

As the Special Assistant Muhammad Afzal Chann offered to frame a formula to bring down the price of sugar during the meeting, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed anger over the surging prices of flour and sugar. “Why these prices are not coming down when there are sufficient wheat and sugar stocks in the country.” he asked his ministers.

He asked the ministers to pinpoint those who are showing negligence in this regard. “All ministries should give in their inputs regarding steps for controlling the price hike,” he added.

The prime minister also took notice of the reports about the shortage of wheat seeds. “There should not be a shortage of the seeds right before the start of wheat sowing,” he directed the ministers.

The Cabinet was also informed about the PTI plans to hold a public meeting in Swat. “Go ahead with the rally plan but make sure coronavirus SOPs are properly observed,” Minister for Planning Asad Umar told the cabinet.

The prime minister also issued directives to the authorities concerned to take stern action against the hoarding of essential food items to reverse the inflationary trends taking a heavy toll on the poor.

Imran Khan emphasised the need for keeping an eye on the demand and supply chain of food items and their prices. “I have been saying from day one that prices should be brought under control,” he said.

The prime minister said he wants the prices of essential commodities brought down at any cost.

The sources said the cabinet gave a go-ahead to the formation of a temporary administrative committee for the Gun and Country Club and endorsed the decisions taken by a cabinet committee on institutional reforms. It also endorsed the Economic Coordination Committee’s (ECC) decisions.

Besides, the cabinet approved handing over of the administrative control of the Sindh Infrastructure Development Company to the Planning and Developing Ministry.
