Punjab set to hold LB elections in December as governor signs new law
Delimitation work set to begin under new act: Govt plans to establish Punjab Local Government Academy for training of representatives and institutions
All obstacles to local government elections in Punjab have officially been removed after Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan signed the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.
According to the report, with the new law now in effect, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will begin fresh delimitation and constituency demarcation in accordance with the updated framework.
The Punjab Assembly Secretariat had forwarded the act to the Governor after it was approved by the assembly.
Following the governor’s signature, a gazette notification will be issued and subsequently sent to the Election Commission.
The ECP will then initiate the process of setting new boundaries as per the Punjab government's request, paving the way for local elections.
The Election Commission has already decided to hold local government elections in Punjab in December, and the enactment of the new legislation brings clarity and legal structure to the upcoming polls.
In addition to legal reforms, the government has also decided to establish the Punjab Local Government Academy to enhance the capacity and training of elected representatives and local institutions.
The main campus of the academy will be located in Lala Musa, while satellite campuses will be established with the approval of the Minister for Local Government.
A Board of Management will be formed to oversee the academy. The Minister for Local Government will serve as the Chairman, and the Secretary for Local Government will be the Vice Chairman.
The Director General of the Local Government and Community Development Department will also be a member of the board, along with two subject experts and one retired officer nominated by the Minister.
The Director of the Academy will serve as its Principal Accounting Officer. A dedicated Punjab Local Government Academy Fund will be established to receive donations, grants, and assistance for the institution.
The rules and regulations of the academy will be implemented with the approval of the Board of Management. Board members may also be granted honorariums with the approval of the Chief Minister.
