Zardari says he may be first to go to prison after APC
Blasts govt’s tactics to suppress opposition, media: Decries govt action against 24NewsHD TV
PPP Co-Chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari has said that he would probably be the first person to land in prison after this all parties conference.
In his short speech, Zardari thanked PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif for virtually attending the conference and asked everyone to pray for the deposed prime minister's health. Both Zardari and Nawaz, who are facing corruption cases, are currently out on bail on account of their health.
Asif Zardari criticised the government over what he called were "tactics" to suppress the opposition and the media. He also mentioned the government’s action against 24NewsHD TV channel.
“We do not need Pemra, we need people’s support and people are listening,” Zardari said and added “People will keep on listening to us. There was no such example in history that one TV channel CEO is in jail and one channel 24NewsHD TV has been banned in Punjab.”
He said today banning TV channel is not possible because of social media.
He welcomed Maryam, PML-N vice-president and daughter of Nawaz Sharif, and said he was happy to see her at the conference. "We have seen the difficulties she has faced and we can understand because my own sister has gone to jail and my wife went to jail [...] We pay tribute to her and we are with you, and will keep fighting for your cause and you will keep fighting for ours, I am sure."
“After this APC I will be the first person in jail, but I request Maulana Fazlur Rehman please come to jail to meet me I will wait for you,” he maintained.
Recalling history, Zardari said “In 2006, Benazir Bhutto had signed Charter of Democracy with Nawaz Sharif. We created harmony and kicked out Musharraf and then we passed 18th Constitutional Amendment, which is like a wall around the constitution.”
He said the political dwarfs now want to change the 18th Amendment.
Asif Zardari remarked “This is my message that we are not for here to derail the government, we want to restore the democracy. I must say to APC, please decide and come up with a way forward, to strengthen the democracy as first foundation is democracy.”
