The government has planned to introduce an independent electricity sale and purchase system.
Experts of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra ) – a body responsible for regulating the electricity supply – will shed light on the competitive electricity trade system at a webinar tomorrow (December 22).
The regulatory body has given go-ahead to introduce the system likely to be launched in 2022 when the reforms of the early 1990s are going to be ended.
Under the new system, power supply companies may purchase electricity from any source at their own. This is being dubbed as a project to better service delivery and get away with power tariffs instability.
Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan approved an increase in electricity prices for, what critics say, meeting IMF directives for the revival of $6 billion programmes the government has been longing for the past 10 months.
Reportedly, the electricity prices could go up by 25 per cent on account of annual base tariff increase of the previous fiscal year,
