Violent mob storms Bangladeshi parliament after Osman Hadi’s funeral

Enraged mob stormed the Bangladeshi parliament soon after the funeral prayers for a student union activist, Osman Hadi, were over in Dhaka on Saturday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.

The mob entered the parliament, shouted slogans and demanded the enforcement of Shariah in the country.

On Saturday, thousands of people gathered to pay their respects at the funeral of Osman Hadi, who succumbed to critical injuries sustained earlier this month.

In line with his family’s wishes, Hadi was laid to rest beside the grave of Bangladesh’s national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.

From the early hours of the morning, people arrived in groups at Manik Mia Avenue and the area in front of the Parliament complex was soon crowded.

Some mourners wrapped themselves in the national flag, while others raised slogans calling for justice over Hadi’s killing.

A few days earlier, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus confirmed Hadi’s death during a live national broadcast on state television.

Hadi had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Singapore after being attacked on December 12 in Dhaka’s Paltan area, when unknown assailants set him on fire while he was travelling in an auto-rickshaw.

Professor Yunus expressed gratitude to the Singapore government for looking after the student activist and vowed that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice.

Hadi had planned to run as an independent candidate from Dhaka-8 in the upcoming elections.

Describing his death as an irreplaceable loss for Bangladesh’s political and democratic future, Yunus extended condolences to Hadi’s wife, only child, and family, assuring that the government would provide full support to the bereaved family.

A one-day official mourning had been declared in the country, with the national flag flying at half-mast and special prayers were held in mosques across Bangladesh.
