Kiara, Alia or Kajol? Who lost Rs82,000 to Instagram fraud

Online scams have become increasingly common with the advent of social media and a shift to online currency.

Bollywood director Karan Johar revealed about a famous celebrity who fell prey to such a scheme. The actress was scammed out of Rs 82,000 by fraudsters over a dress on Instagram.

Karan Johar said, “I know someone close to me who got scammed. I can’t mention her name, she won’t like it. She was a famous friend of mine, an actress, and she had to go to this international film festival. Generally while scrolling through Instagram one night she saw that there was a limited edition designer outfit."

He added, “It was supposed to be sold at an unbelievable price. Originally priced at about Rs 4.5 lakh for just Rs 82,000 or something. She thought, ‘Wow, what a deal.’ She DMed them and they immediately responded, ‘Oh, it’s the last piece. Grab it now otherwise, you’re going to lose it.’ She got really excited. This price was perfect for her to spend."

“When she asked for pictures of the gown, they shared every single detail. She just transferred the money through her UPI ID. Not only did the gown never arrive but she also repeatedly pressed them for the delivery or a refund. Nothing happened," Karan revealed.

As the clip has gone viral on social media, netizens have begun to wonder who is this actress. One person wrote on Reddit, “Any guesses who? Seems like maybe Kiara or Alia." Another person wrote, “It’s neither Alia nor Kiara. Both of them are pretty high end it seems. They will shop for Rs 4.5 lakh rather than buying from some random Insta page on discount." One person opined, “The only person that can be is Kajol. Or maybe a fake story."

Several users mentioned that Karan’s story was a scripted ad campaign. One person wrote, “He really wants us to believe an actress is paying via UPI to buy a limited edition dress. Lmaoo." Another added, “Why would any actress pay through their UPI ID on their own when they have designers, managers, PR team and sponsors? Even his podcast stories are unrealistic." Another added, “It’s advertising, guys."
