LHC rejects plea to halt CCD encounters, action against police officers

The Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea seeking an immediate halt to alleged police encounters by the Crime Control Department (CCD) and action against the officers involved.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the petition was filed by Advocate Mian Dawood Ahmed, requesting the court to stop alleged CCD encounters and order proceedings against the responsible officials. The case was heard by Justice Ahbar Gul Khan.
During the hearing, DIG Legal Malik Owais Ahmed, appearing on behalf of the Inspector General of Police Punjab, submitted a detailed report to the court regarding the alleged CCD encounters.
Several senior police officers, including DIG Legal Malik Owais Ahmed, SP CCD Nasir Abbas Panjota and others, were present in Justice Ahbar Gul Khan's court.
The police report informed the court that 42 cases related to alleged CCD encounters had been transferred to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The police report further stated that the police were fully implementing the law governing custodial torture and deaths.
The report also claimed that since the establishment of the CCD, serious crime had decreased by 65 percent across the province.
It added that in alleged encounters involving the CCD, one sub-inspector had been martyred while 96 police personnel sustained injuries.
After hearing the arguments and reviewing the submissions, Justice Ahbar Gul Khan remarked that the court would pass an order after examining the report submitted by the IG Punjab.
