Afghan Taliban begin disarming TTP as major breakthrough achieved in Pakistan-Afghanistan security talks

In what diplomatic sources are calling a major breakthrough, the Afghan Taliban government has begun disarming members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and relocating them away from the Pakistan border, following high-level security talks held yesterday between the two neighbouring countries, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Monday.

According to official sources, the decision was communicated during a two-hour and forty-minute meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Afghan Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, who led their respective delegations.

During the talks, the Afghan side confirmed that TTP members have begun relocating to Ghazni and other areas deeper within Afghanistan, away from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. They also stated that the disarmament of TTP fighters is underway, as part of efforts to neutralise the threat the group poses to regional security.

The Pakistani delegation, frustrated by repeated cross-border attacks, urged the Afghan leadership to take the threat of TTP more seriously. “We are tired of carrying out important funerals,” they reportedly said, pressing Kabul to stop allowing its soil to be used for attacks against Pakistan.

The delegation further cautioned the Afghan government: “Do not please your and our enemies”, highlighting that Pakistan views the TTP as a shared threat, not just a bilateral concern.

In response, Sirajuddin Haqqani and other Afghan officials expressed willingness to cooperate, assuring Islamabad of their commitment to regional stability. The Afghan side revealed that a large number of Afghans who collaborated with the TTP in attacks inside Pakistan have been arrested.

However, Afghan officials also noted that such measures will take time and asked for continued engagement and cooperation.

The development is seen as a cautiously optimistic step forward in resolving one of the most persistent sources of tension between the two countries, the TTP’s use of Afghan soil to launch attacks inside Pakistan.
