Katy Perry gave fans quite a scare during her Lifetimes tour stop in San Francisco when a mechanical malfunction nearly sent her plunging mid-air — but the pop superstar has since turned the terrifying moment into comedy gold.
While performing her hit anthem Roar at the Chase Centre, the 40-year-old singer was dramatically lifted above the crowd on a mechanical butterfly. But what was supposed to be a magical flight quickly turned into a panic-inducing scene as the contraption suddenly dipped, leaving Katy visibly alarmed and clutching the structure tightly.
The singer momentarily stopped singing as she tried to stabilise herself mid-performance, glancing upward in confusion as the stage prop slowed and tilted. Despite the scare, she impressively gathered herself and continued the show, earning praise from fans for her professionalism and composure.
Taking to Instagram the next day, Katy poked fun at the mishap by sharing a series of photos captioned, “How the LA show started … how the LA show ended.” The carousel began with a serene shot of her lounging in a bathtub and ended with footage of her shaken but walking out in a dressing gown after the incident.
She also shared the clip on her Instagram Stories with the tongue-in-cheek caption: “Goodnight San Francisco.”
Fans flooded social media with reactions, many comparing the incident to Beyoncé’s recent technical failure during her Cowboy Carter tour. One user wrote, “First Beyoncé, now Katy Perry – next it’s gonna be Usher getting launched into orbit.” Another added, “The way Katy held it together is insane – that could’ve gone so wrong. The moment came just days after Katy got emotional during her Los Angeles concert, where she seemingly referenced her split from ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom. While performing her ballad Not Like the Movies, she told fans, “You're gonna make me sing this song in this time in my life? OK, we'll do it!”
