Flash floods, rains claim 12 lives in KP as NDMA issues fresh alert

There was no let-up in flash floods triggered by heavy rains as a fresh alert was issued on Tuesday after heavy downpour and floods caused by cloudbursts wreaked havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming 12 lives, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Heavy rains have caused widespread destruction across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leaving at least 12 people dead and 15 others seriously injured over the past 24 hours, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The PDMA has released a preliminary report detailing the damage caused by heavy rainfall and flash floods across the province. The report stated that most of the casualties occurred after the roofs and walls of houses collapsed due to the intense rain.

Among those who lost their lives were six men, one woman, and five children, while the injured included eight men, two women, and five children.

The report further revealed that 14 houses were damaged during the recent spell of heavy rain. The rain-related incidents were reported from several districts, including Peshawar, Khyber, Torghar, Mardan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Kurram.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall also disrupted public transport in the provincial capital of Peshawar. The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service was temporarily suspended due to waterlogging. Several BRT underpasses were flooded after the downpour, resembling large ponds and making it impossible for buses to operate safely.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as rescue and relief efforts remain underway in the affected areas. Residents have been advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during ongoing adverse weather conditions.

NDMA issues rain and flood alert

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a heavy rain and flood alert for different areas of the country till July 24, 2026.

According to NDMA, there is a risk of flash flooding in Shimshal, Hunza, Chapursan, Kilik, Shigar, Shyok, and Hushe rivers in the districts of Hunza, Shigar and Ghanche in Gilgit-Baltistan.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, water levels are likely to rise to dangerous levels in Jhelum, Neelum, Poonch, and Mahl rivers, as well as Betar Nullah, Bhimber Nullah, the Kanshi River and tributary streams of the Jhelum and Poonch rivers.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, flash floods are expected in Chitral, Kabul, Swat, and Panjkora rivers, as well as Muqam Nullah and Kalpani Nullah. Similar conditions may also affect local streams in Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Kohat, Bannu, Karak, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, North and South Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Mansehra, Buner and Swabi districts.

High-level flooding is also expected in the seasonal streams and rivers of northeastern Balochistan.

Flooding is anticipated in the Chenab River at Marala and the Jhelum River (upstream of Mangla).

Water flow in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers could increase if water is released from India's Thein, Pong, and Bhakra dams.

In Punjab, there is a possibility of flooding in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, Soan River, the Potohar region, as well as seasonal streams and rivers in north-eastern Balochistan.

There is also a risk of urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Khushab, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Lahore, Okara, Chakwal and Attock.

The NDMA has directed district administrations to ensure continuous monitoring of rivers and streams, pre-deployment of rescue teams and implementation of precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.

The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable and mountainous areas.

Kaghan bridge damaged

The main bridge on Siri Nullah in Kaghan Valley has been hammered by heavy rains for two days and needed urgent repairs. However, no work has yet started to repair the bridge, which was partly damaged in the rains.

Local residents feared that if an immediate action was taken then the bridge may collapse altogether. The flash flood was eroding the bridge’s foundations from one side.

Four arrested in Mansehra

Four people were arrested in Mansehra District for violating Section 144 by collecting logs from River Kunhar.

Taking action after Section 144 violation, Balakot assistant commissioner and SHO arrested the four persons. A case under section 188 was registered against them.

Many areas flooded in Chiniot, Phalia

The River Chenab started causing havoc in Chiniot and due to river erosion, many areas have started getting flooded.

According to report, Mianwal village was submerged due to floodwater erosion in Chenab River. Last year, Mianwal village was submerged 80 percent.

The only surviving mosque in Mianwal also succumbed to river erosion this time.

River erosion also engulfed the villages of Doham Syedan ​​and Wad Syedan and Sahamal after water level in Chenab started rising again. Water inflow also increased at Marala.

According to latest situation of Chenab River at Head Qadirabad in Phalia, inflow and outflow of water continuously increasing. 

Water inflow at Chenab River Head Qadirabad is recorded 109,721 cusecs while outflow is recorded 90,196 cusecs.

Medium to high level of flooding is likely at Head Qadirabad during the next 24 hours.
