Bride refuses to marry after seeing drunk groom upon arrival of wedding procession

A wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district of India ended dramatically after a 19-year-old bride, Shashi, called off the ceremony when the groom, Amit Rana, arrived at her residence visibly intoxicated along with a drunken wedding procession.

The incident occurred last Sunday night, when Amit reached the bride's home accompanied by relatives, a band, and other guests. His inebriated state quickly drew the ire of the bride and her family.

According to Shashi’s brother, “My sister refused to marry the groom after seeing the entire procession intoxicated.”

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the groom was unable to maintain composure and appeared heavily drunk during his arrival.

In an attempt to justify his condition, Amit claimed that his friends had mixed alcohol into his cold drink without his knowledge.

However, the bride's family rejected the explanation, asserting that not only Amit but the entire wedding party was under the influence.

Furious over the situation, Shashi made a swift decision to cancel the wedding, stating firmly, “I cannot marry a drunkard who can't even stay sober at his wedding.”

Despite repeated efforts by both families to persuade her, the bride stood her ground and refused to go ahead with the ceremony.

To mediate the situation, a local panchayat was called, during which the bride’s family demanded reimbursement for the wedding expenses. However, Amit’s family initially refused to compensate for the loss.

 With no resolution reached, the matter was escalated to the local police.

Following a formal statement from the bride, the police detained the groom and one of his relatives for questioning.

Eventually, in a bid to settle the issue, Amit’s family agreed to pay Rs 7 lakh as compensation to Shashi’s family for the abrupt cancellation of the wedding.

The incident has stirred conversations on social media and in the local community.
