ECP withdraws old delimitation schedule, to hold Punjab LG polls under new Act 2025

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to withdraw the delimitation schedule earlier issued under the Punjab Local Government Act 2022, announcing that the upcoming local government elections in Punjab will now be conducted under the newly approved Punjab Local Government Act 2025.

According to the ECP, the Punjab government has been given four weeks to finalize the delimitation and demarcation rules under the new law.

“With the promulgation of the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 stands repealed,” the ECP stated.

It added that the provincial government has officially notified the commission through a letter regarding the approval of the new Act.

The commission noted that the new legislation brings significant changes to the structure and framework of local governments.

Conducting delimitations or taking steps for elections under the repealed law, it said, would constitute a violation of Section 219 of the Elections Act 2017.

“The Election Commission will hold local body elections in Punjab strictly in accordance with the prevailing local government laws,” the statement concluded.
