Karachi airport announces partial runway shutdown from Nov 5 to 24
Main runway to be closed for new taxiway construction: NOTAM issued to international airlines
The main runway at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport will be closed for two hours daily from November 5 to November 24 to facilitate the construction of a new taxiway, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday.
According to the airport officials, the development of Taxiway Q will take place on Runway 07R/25L, which will be partially closed during this period. Despite the closure, the runway will remain available for emergency and VVIP landings.
A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has been issued to all airlines to inform them of the scheduled closure and ensure operational adjustments are made accordingly. This construction is part of a broader upgrade initiative underway at Karachi Airport.
According to sources, work is already in progress on the airport’s second runway, 07L/25R, which recently saw major milestones completed ahead of schedule.
On August 6, 2025, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced the successful early completion of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) works on Runway 07L/25R—nearly a month ahead of schedule.
Originally launched in late December 2024, the PQC phase wrapped up by July 30, 2025, thanks to the use of advanced slipform paving technology and round-the-clock construction operations.
The runway rehabilitation is part of a comprehensive modernisation project aimed at enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and passenger capacity for both domestic and international flights.
A spokesperson for the PAA stated, “We are proud to reach this important milestone ahead of schedule. It reflects the hard work of our engineering teams, contractors, and project management staff, all working with a clear commitment to excellence.”
