Super El Niño: Pakistan braces for intense rains as NDMA issues monsoon alert

Pakistan’s disaster management authorities (NDMA) on Wednesday issued a warning over an unusually intense monsoon season in 2026, with forecasts suggesting the arrival of a super El Niño that could significantly alter rainfall patterns across the region.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, officials from the National Disaster Management Authority have said that the upcoming monsoon is expected to bring stronger and more frequent bursts of rain. 

Technical expert Dr Tayyab, speaking to local media, said there is a high likelihood of cloudbursts and heavy downpours, with some areas possibly receiving a month’s worth of rainfall within just one or two days.

He added that the monsoon this year would differ from previous patterns, with certain regions experiencing intense rainfall while others may see very little precipitation. In particular, parts of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to receive below-average rainfall.

At the same time, higher temperatures have been observed in northern regions of the country, raising further concerns about extreme weather conditions. 

Authorities have also identified increased flood risks, especially in the Indus River, which is considered more vulnerable this season compared with the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers.

The NDMA has circulated a detailed advisory to all provinces outlining preparedness measures. The plan includes guidance on emergency response, essential supplies and coordination strategies to deal with potential flooding and related disasters.

Officials said teams are actively reviewing contingency plans and ensuring that necessary arrangements are in place to respond quickly to any emergencies arising from the expected severe weather.
