GB risks food crisis after shortage of wheat

Owing to the shortage of wheat, there are fears of food crisis developing in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) that has prompted the federal minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to intimate Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif about the development, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
Quoting its sources, the channel reported that the minister had told the prime minister that if the situation persisted, it could lead to law and order situation in the territory.
The minister had informed the premier that the federal government was supplying wheat to GB less than its allotted quota, the sources added.
The minister demanded PM Shehbaz to supply 13, 333 tonnes of wheat to the territory as per its quota.
Similarly, the sources disclosed, that the prime minister had also been demanded to order the release of wheat in order to meet the shortfall of 25,480 tonnes between July, 2022 and January, 2023.
Moreover, they added, the minister had also demanded additional funds of over Rs6 billion for the territory.
The federal government has set the quota of 160, 000 tonnes of wheat for GB during the ongoing financial year.
And if the commodity was supplied in this quantity, the shortfall would reach 36 tonnes by the end of the current year, the sources concluded.
