Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Shahzad Ata Elahi on Wednesday told the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that the governor, and not the president, had the right to give a date for an election to a provincial assembly, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Giving his suggestion to the election commission after the commission received a letter from President Arif Alvi in which he had given the election date, the AGP said the president had nothing to do with it since under the 18th Amendment, it was the governor who had to announce the date for elections.
Meanwhile, the ECP will meet again tomorrow with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja in the chair to decide the poll date.
Sources told 24News that in this connection, the election commission had sought suggestions from the AGP and constitutional experts in writing following which it would hold consultations before replying to the president’s letter.
